The group has gone through a few transformations, and eventually settled as the current line-up of Lowell Campbell on vocals, Marinos Stratopoulous on lead guitar and vocals, Dave Campbell on guitar and vocals, Jason Sixx on bass, and Mat Phiish on drums. The band has achieved a lot so far, developing a stand-out sound, out-of-province touring, as well as filming two music videos and regular air-play. They are a force to be reckoned with in the Vancouver rock scene, and definitely a band to keep an eye out for.
The boys were nice enough to do an interview for the music blog, letting us know a little about who they are as musicians, what they think of the Van City live music scene, and what they have planned for the future...

- How did One Left Alive come to be? How did you all meet?
Lowell formed the band after meeting with his long time friend & guitarist Marinos Stratopoulous. After a few changes within the band and the evolution of the sound, our message and image One Left Alive came to fully be the band it is through common friends and mutual interests.
- What is the musical background of the members? Are you formally trained, or mostly self-taught musicians?
While some of us are trained in the arts of Aikido and Ninjutsu, we are also trained in the arts of Emotion and Love! But to be more serious, for the most part our members have had some formal training, and as passionate musicians we're constantly working on our craft to further our skills and better ourselves musically and evolve our sound.
- Why did you decide to change the name of the band with the album release?
When the band first formed we started out as "Kush" which was fun, however it had its limitations. There were other bands with the same name, as well, we also wanted to be taken more seriously within the industry as professional musicians. We consider ourselves and our music to be original. So with the release of the album we just knew it was time to get serious. And ergo One Left Alive came to be.
- How has your sound evolved since the earlier incarnation of the band?
Our sound has evolved a lot, not only over growth and time of playing together, but the fact we first started out as 3 piece power trio. Now over more than a few years later the band has grown to become a 5 piece powerhouse hard rock band. This brings power and fulfillment to our music. With 5 guys there's a lot more range for creativity and inspiration to be brought to the table.
- Your songs have interesting timing and melodies, what is the band's process when developing new material?
Our process for writing is fairly straight forward and not some mysterious formula. Our process is a "Find The Best Riff" game. Whatever wins stays. Its a collective process between all the band members, based on feeling and collaborative effort amongst the whole band. We find a lot of times when writing one song, a riff or piece of music will evolve into what we will use in another song later down the road.
- What has been your experience with the Vancouver music scene? Do you find it a struggle to deal with promoters, venues, etc, or have your interactions been positive?
Vancouver has been very good to us! As well as, most importantly, our supporters!!! The promoters have been more than fair to us, and what they agree on they always stick to their word and come through! The venues here have been great to play, however we wish there were more.
- What are your plans for upcoming gigs and other projects in the near future?
We are working with a couple of very well known and reputable promoters who are setting up a proposed plan for us for the next half year. We also have another show coming up very soon that we can't quite let out of the bag yet. We can guarantee to go out and put on an exciting rockin' show and have a great time doing it. In the meantime, we're currently staying on top of our writing, as there's plans for a new EP soon, and talks about a Western Canadian tour to come.
