Jessica Lee Interview
Describe what it felt like walking on stage and performing at Massey Hall after winning the Marianas Trench contest.
To be honest, I don't think I really felt anything while performing - I was probably still in shock. I had so much adrenaline coursing through my veins from the moment I arrived in Toronto right up until I finished the song that I didn't really take a moment to think about what I was doing. As soon as I stepped off the stage I had a mini panic attack thinking, "did I really just sing with Josh in front of thousands of people?" Yes, I did. And it was the best feeling in the world. I think I caught the performance bug then!
Watching that first audition tape, even with no producing or editing at all, you have fantastic vocal control; have you ever had any formal or informal music training?
I only really started any formal vocal training in the last two years, so prior to that audition tape I had only sang in school and church choirs. I also had a job for a short period of time where I worked as a "Party Princess" - this involved me dressing up as a Disney princess and going to kids birthday parties and singing to them. It was awesome.
How have you been dealing with spending so much time away from home while you pursue your music career?
Being away from home is hard, but I'm busying myself with trying to make a new home out here in Vancouver. I get to spend a lot more time with people in the music industry who have been helping me to further my career. I also met my band out here and having jam practices together definitely helps get rid of homesickness! I will always miss old friends, but I've made some wonderful new friends in Vancouver that I never would have known had I not moved!
What do you like most about Vancouver?
What's not to like about Vancouver? There are so many amazing places to eat and the weather is incredible (most of the time). I love the live music scene out here as well - always someone or something to see! And did I mention the food? Vancouver sure has some yummy eats.
What have you learned from the collaborative process of working with some of 604 Records' most talented artists?
Collaborating on music is one of the most inspiring processes in this industry. I love coming up with something new and exciting and working it to its fullest potential with someone you are inspired and encouraged by. You're basically making music you love and developing amazing relationships in the process - what more could I ask for?
How did "Cassica" come to be?
Cassica is my musical side project with my best friend and labelmate Cat Thomson. We met this time last year to work on a song for my album and fell in love. We've been giggling, dancing, and singing together ever since. For Christmas 2013 we released our first Cassica single, "A Very Merry Christmas" and used its release to promote our fundraiser with the Empty Stocking Fund to help provide a better holiday season for underprivileged families. The song was so much fun to write and even more fun to perform throughout December! More to come from this for sure :)
Can you tell us anything about upcoming plans for touring or gigs in the Vancouver area?
There is one plan that I most definitely cannot say anything about just yet, but be on the lookout for some local Vancouver area dates starting in January 2014!
What do your fans have to look forward to from you in the New Year?
This New Year I will be focusing on playing more live shows with my band, while continuing to write new music for my second album. I will also be putting out a new single early 2014 and the music video soon after that! I can't wait. 2014 will be the best year yet!
Is there anything else you would like my readers to know?
Stay tuned for a big announcement early next year and keep your eyes peeled for new music and new videos :) Cassica will also have new projects in the works! You can let fans know that I love being in contact with them via FB, Twitter, etc. so don't be afraid to contact me! They can also check out merch on my website and get signed/personalized goodies as well.
